Operation Breakthrough's mission is to promote individual and family self-sufficiency, through advocacy, referrals and directly providing comprehensive high quality services to low-income families and individuals within Durham County. We are committed to uniting with other resources, whenever possible, to assist families in achieving a status of self-sufficiency.
Operation Breakthrough has played major roles in both the Civil Rights and anti-poverty movements in Durham, NC.
When established in August 1964, OBT was the flagship agency for Terry Sanford's fledgling NC Fund and a model for agencies that followed.
